Question?
Out of curiosity, does anyone on my F-List have a journalfen account? Is it worth getting one?

love,
J--

I was just given one, so I don't know how worth it it is?

However, several of my friends have them to keep an eye on the different fandom blow-ups and discussions that happen there so they can comment and be heard, too.

Okay, thanks! I might get one for myself then. :)

I just joined - mostly to keep an eye on fandom_wank and assorted communities.

It's a really fannish-oriented site, so if you're not into fandom, it probably wouldn't be worth it.

I'm enjoying it so far though.

Ah, that's what I figured from my brief cruises around the site. I might give it a try. Thanks for the info! :D

Journalfen is run by the two fans, ZorroRojo and Robin Serano who run Slashcity, which they opened six years ago (iirc), back when slash sites had a hard time finding webhosts and were getting TOSsed regularly.

ZR recently posted in the jftech comm at journalfen that they will be upgrading JF to the latest LJ clone version (meaning it'll like the current Livejournal site) as well doing some backend things to the hardware, upgrading and load balancing which will greatly improve the reliability and availability of the site.

IMHO, because it's fen that run it and they've dealt with C&D letters in the past (by laughing at them :)), they're better able to understand fandom's issues, they have no problem with the type of thing that LJ is squawking about - they understand that fan art isn't child porn. And ZR and Robin are pretty tough old geezer fans who've been around a fair length of time, seen the various hassles that fandom has gone thru and are pretty well equipped to defend fandom.

There's a couple drawbacks to JF, all users must be 18 or older and free accounts have to be sponsored by a paid member. They have opened up free accounts for a short period at times in the past and maybe they'll do that again after they upgrade but right now, gotta have a paid member request a free account for you to get in without paying.

Thanks for the interesting background info story. Yeah, I've got an account there now sponsored by a paid member, and am well and truly over 18 so no worries there XD It's also good to know that they're upgrading the backend to the site since that was a minor irk to me. I'll add you to my F-List here too if that's okay, I like the title of your journal *laughs*

You're welcome and feel free to friend, I'm an equal opportunity friender. :)

I'm also at journalfen as alicettlg too and I'll be gradually switching over to that as my primary journal when they get it upgraded. I'm still keeping IJ as my backup and I'll keep supporting IJ financially cause Squeaky's been wonderful about this influx of odd people ;) and I like supporting the little guy!

The title of my journal is from my favorite quote from a wonderful little movie chockful of wonderful actors, Playing by Heart, the longer quote and several other favorites of mine are here:

Thanks for the add. I'll add you at journalfen too once it's all upgraded, which is probably when I'll start using it more as well, although not more than this place. There is a great sense of community at IJ. :D I'll have to keep an eye out for Playing by Heart next time I'm in the video store (although having a little one means not much free time for watching movies nowadays.)
